Our Academic Program
Reading and Language Arts:
Treasures
Treasures is a research-based, comprehensive Reading Language Arts program for students in Kindergarten – Grade 6. Offering teachers the resources they need to help students succeed, Treasures features high-quality literature, explicit instructional examples, and practice problems to ensure that students grow to become life-long readers. Treasures is aligned with the Core Knowledge Curriculum and provides students with a strong background in the liberal arts. The program encompasses “tiered/leveled readers,” so students can access the curriculum content regardless of their reading level. Thus, Treasures ensures that the program differentiates and “meets students where they are.”
In addition to reading instruction, the Treasures program includes phonics, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar/writing components to help to ensure that students have the listening, comprehension, and writing skills necessary to be on track for college and career readiness. Assessments are administered every five to six lessons to ensure that student progress is carefully tracked and that instruction is adjusted to ensure student success.
Saxon Phonics and Spelling
Saxon Phonics and Spelling is an instructional program for students in Kindergarten – Grade 2. Its explicit and systematic approach to phonics and spelling instruction provides everything students need to be fluent, confident readers and spellers. As an effective supplement to the reading program, Saxon Phonics and Spelling help students master the essential foundational skills of phonemic awareness, alphabetizing, decoding, fluency, spelling, and vocabulary.
Through incremental development and continual review, the Saxon Phonics and Spelling program presents new learning in small amounts that students review daily throughout the school year. The Saxon Phonics and Spelling method of instruction provides students with the reinforcement and practice they need to achieve reading and spelling success. The noted skills are critical to helping students to become strong readers who can comprehend at high levels.
Mathematics
Saxon Math
Saxon Math is a textbook series for students in Kindergarten – Grade 12 based on incremental development and continual review of mathematical concepts to give students time to learn and practice concepts throughout the year. The series is aligned with the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and has been adapted for Imagine Andrews students. Although content may differ by course, the incremental, distributed approach of Saxon Math is the same, with mathematical concepts presented in a series of short “lessons” intended to gradually build understanding and previously-taught concepts practiced and assessed throughout the course. The Imagine Andrews mathematics program is set to ensure that, at a minimum, students are on track to successfully complete Algebra I by the end of grade 8.
Science
Full Option Science System (FOSS)
Full Option Science System (FOSS) is a research-based science curriculum for students in Kindergarten – Grade 8 developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California at Berkeley. The FOSS program materials are designed to meet the challenge of providing meaningful science education for all students in diverse American classrooms. It follows the “5E model” of Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration, and Evaluation.
The best way for students to appreciate the scientific enterprise, learn important scientific concepts, and develop the ability to think critically is to actively construct ideas through their own inquiries, investigations, and analyses. The FOSS program was created to engage students in these processes as they explore the natural world.
